Prizegivings
Next week the school has 3 prizegivings plus rehearsals, so the choir, orchestra and jazz band will be making music from Monday-Wednesday!

Last weekend...
Well done to our Marimba group who performed at Cashmere High as part of the Re-Percussion concert on Sunday evening.... and well done to the Jazz Band (with 3 ex-Chisnallwood ring-ins) who at the last minute played in the ChCh Santa Parade on Sunday afternoon!

Christchurch's annual all-percussion showcase concert. Over 100 performers and music from around the globe. Run by (and featuring) Pandemonium Percussion alongside school, community and other professional groups.

Wrapping up November



KIDS IN TOWN 2
Thursday 28th November 12.30-1pm
Venue: Christchurch City Council Foyer of wet (53 Hereford St)
or Re:START Mall if fine. Notification will be on the chisnallwoodmusic facebook page, school twitter and the music website.
The performance will feature our Irish Band plus a couple of items from the Ukes and Choir.

WINDSOR COMMUNITY CELEBRATION
Friday 29th November at Windsor School
"Feedback" and our Jazz Combo will be performing at this outdoor event if fine. These two groups contain many ex-Windsor students so it is special that they can be part of this event. They are on between 6.50 and 8pm.

UKES
This Saturday our Ukulele Band travel up to Auckland to join the NZ Kiwilele Festival and play along with 2500 other uke players.

ITINERANT  NIGHTS
Well done to all the students who performed over the 3 Itinerant nights in a total of 11 short concerts. Thanks to the students and itinerant teachers who put fantastic preparation in and made it enjoyable and friendly end-of-year events.

Nov 14th

BANDQUEST

Congratulations to all the rock bands who played at the Canterbury BandQuest 1 last night. All the bands played really well and to a superb standard. It was a great night with special sound and lighting. There were a total of 14 bands from ChCh and all the way from Timaru, with 5 from Chisnallwood. The judges were from the Dukes and a past RockQuest competitor and the guest band from Shirley Boys High AASHAWILLANDCULLEN was great.

Fantastic results from the Chisnallwood bands:
Best Original Lyric Award: Breana Riordan from the band "Rewind" for her lyrics for "Turn back the time"
"Killer" Guitarist award: Reuben Sepulona
3rd Place: "Fallen Sky" - Meg Collinson, James Kleiss, Tom Heeney and Liam Johnson.
1st Place winners: "Feedback" - Olivia Costello, William Murton, Taylah Emmett, Devin Pullyblank, Micah Watkinson and Thomas Hughes.
The prize winners have won $550 to for our music department spend at the CHCH Rock Shop!



ITINERANT NIGHTS
These start next week and the programmes are looking great! You can find detailed information and a form here on the music webpage. You may have to wait a moment for the page to load. These are all free to attend and the dates are Wed Nov, Thurs Nov 21 and Monday Nov 25th.

November Music



BANDQUEST
When: Wed, Nov 13th 7pm-9.30pm (Doors open at 6pm)
Where: Chisnallwood Hall
Cost: $10 (free for band members). Door sales.
What: Rock band competition for bands up to year 8 from around Canterbury. Bands get a sound check and feedback from judges earlier in the day then get to do the full on performance/competition at night to an audience of incredible supporters! (you!)
Chisnallwood Bands taking part are: Feedback, 3-50, Fallen Sky and Gold Rush Crew. Rewind will be playing at their 2pm soundcheck but not in the evening.

All students learning itinerant music at Chisnallwood have the chance to perform at one of the Itinerant nights in November. This is a fantastic opportunity to share what students have been learning, and great opportunity to meet the itinerant teacher too!

The Chissy Uke group will take a day trip to Auckland to play with 3000 other uke players for the afternoon!

ChCH Schools' Music FESTIVAL
Congratulations to our 36 students who sung in our wonderful school choir at the ChCh Schools' Music Festival who performed at the CBS Arena last week. It was a stunning night of very high quality and fun music from 1,000s of young Canterbury students. The Festival runs for three nights and we have a number of students representing Chisnallwood on each night in representative groups. These students are:
Senior Choir: Olivia Costello, Rory Humm, William Murton (who also gave a spoken introduction last night) and Breana Riodan.
Orchestra: Claudia Crosland (violin), Rion Ormandy (percussion) and Liam Johnson (double bass).
Concert band: Max Bobby (trumpet)
Ukulele group: Travis Griffin, Claudia Crosland, Liam Johnson, James Kleiss, Norbert Muller and Aiyana Manson-King.

ChCh BIG BAND FESTIVAL
Well done to our jazz bands who played over Labour Weekend at this festival at the Pallet Pavillion, Re:START Mall and Court Theatre.
This week they will be playing for an International education conference and the NZEI Teacher Graduation.

PIRATES on SATURDAY 12th OCTOBER

A reminder that Pirates of the Caribbean is on tomorrow at the CBS Arena!


Ahoy me hearties! Set sail with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra for a night of thrilling adventure as we show Disney’s buccaneering blockbuster, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl with the exhilarating score performed live at the same time.
With 70 musicians and a choir, Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and the irrepressible Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) will spring to life on the big screen at CBS Canterbury Arena.
A tale of daring escapades on the high seas, the movie follows Will and Jack as they rescue the beautiful Elizabeth from the cursed crew of the infamous Black Pearl.
Presented for the very first time in New Zealand, the CSO is delighted to bring to our Canterbury audience this swashbuckling spectacular.

There are limited offers available for the Pirates CSO concert at night. Back Stage will be interesting for any sound/light/video tech-minded students and dress rehearsal fantastic for any music students and families. You can attend both if you want to! JON SHONE seminar
Jon Shone will be talking about the fascinating life behind the scenes of One Direction and his music career.
When: Thursday Oct 10th, 10.30-11.30am
Where: Chisnallwood Intermediate School, Breezes Road, Christchurch 8061
Cost: $10 entry 
There is also a seminar at 1pm at Jazz School for Tertiary students.
After leaving University, Jon began his career as a Piano Teacher in North London. In 2008, Jon decided he wanted to move on and within 5 years has built his career to become known as one of the major Musical Directors in the industry. Currently, he is looking after all aspects of live music for the world’s biggest boy band, One Direction.
From 2008-2013 Jon has worked with Katy Perry, Marina and the Diamonds, Taio Cruz, X-Factor, Bryan Adams, Jessica Mau-boy, Olly Murs, Ndubz, Pixie Lott and Tulisa, to name a few. His Arranging, performances and recordings can be seen and heard on iTunes, concert DVD's and on the last 4 years of Radio 1’s Best of Live Lounge albums.
Spending the last 2 years with One Direction, 2013 sees Jon's biggest project to date. Musically Directing and playing Keyboards for a colossal 9 month world tour, visiting 131 arenas over 5 continents. Along side this, filming and arranging music for the 1D 3D Movie which was realeased in August.
In the Access All Areas Q&A, Jon will talk about life at the top of the industry, the highs and lows, the pressures and successes of working in pop music and what it’s really like on the inside.
“If this kind of knowledge was available to me when I was learning, it would have been invaluable’!

For the first time in New Zealand the movie that began Disney’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ series will be screened accompanied live by the CSO. 70 musicians and a choir will perform the film’s original soundtrack as this magical fantasy with Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) unfolds.
The next day students have an opportunity for a backstage production tour

Music News

CONGRATULATIONS to the JAZZ BIG BAND AND COMBO for getting a SPECIAL COMMENDATION at the NZSM Jazz festival last weekend. The band got to experience the Wellington Wobble on the third floor of the St James Theatre and did what any musician would do... evacuated with instruments to the car park and continued to play! Over the weekend they had performances, workshops, a music history lecture, as well as visits to Weta Studio, Te Papa, 10 pin bowling and plenty of ping pong at our Silverstream accommodation venue. It was a worthwhile and fun two and half days!

Welcome to term 3




JAZZQUEST will be held this weekend at CPIT Jazz School, corner of Madras and High Streets on the third floor auditorium. It is a gold coin entry for non-players. Our jazz bands are playing on Sunday 4th August at 10am and 12noon. Supporters are welcome. There is Wilson's car parking available on Tuam St near Madras St.

HIP HOP DANCE CLASS - Spaces now open for term 3! We are learning a brand new performance dance this term, new (and current) students are welcome. Every Friday, 3-4pm in the media room. $72 term fee. Christchurch Symphony Orchestra

This Saturday night, 6 July in the CBS Arena,  L.A Mitchell will be singing with the CSO (conducted by Tom Rainey) as well as the Dukes, Mark Vanilau, Anika Moa and Dave Dobbyn.
