Music news Dec 8th


Thanks to the Jazz Band, Mr Richardson, Dr Bell, Mrs Jones and all the supporters for making the New Brighton Santa Parade a possibility and such a fun experience!




Congratulations to the Chisnallwood Rock Bands for very fine performances at the Inter-School rock event on Sunday which has 10 young school bands playing! Thanks to Zebedees and CJs Music Works for their fantastic support!

RE-PERCUSSION
Sunday 12 December, 6:30-9:00pm.
McCombs Performing Arts Centre, Cashmere High School, 172 Rose St, Christchurch
Christchurch's annual all-percussion showcase concert is run by (and features) Pandemonium with both secondary and primary school, community and other professional groups. There will be over 100 performers and with music from around the globe including the Chisnallwood Percussion Ensemble!

Orders are now being taken for the Chisnallwood 2010 Music CD.
For just $10 you will hear memories of RTK, Pasifika, the orchestra, jazz, rock, ukulele, percussion and other music groups at Chisnallwood this year.

Details for the New Brighton Santa Parade

The Parade sets off from Marine Parade, opposite the New Brighton Club, at 10.30am. It takes about 45 minutes from start to finish.
Road closures are set up at 10am. Our band needs to be assembled on Marine Parade by 10am.
Parents can park in the carpark of the NB working men's Club.

Our students are to wear black uniform with Christmas decorations, hats etc. Bring pegs for music.

ORDER OF EVENTS.

9am-2pm Market in the mall
9am Helpers at Chisnallwood to set up the truck
9.30am Jazz Band members arrive at school if you need a ride to New Brighton
9.40am trucks and vans depart Chisnallwood
10am The whole band to be set up on the truck on Marine Parade. You can park next to the New Brighton Working Men's Club, 202 Marine Parade.
10.10am Santa arrives on the beach
10.30am Parade starts.
11.15am parade ends back on Marine Parade
11.30 onwards Willie McArthur hosts a Community Concert in the mall.
11.30-1pm Santa shares fruit form his garden in the New Brighton Project Centre.

Upcoming Music Events

Thursday 25th November 7pm The Chisnallwood Jazz band has a guest performance at Westburn School, 257 Waimairi Road at 7pm

ITINERANT NIGHT 2 - Dec 2nd. 6.30-8.30pm
This concert is for all students learning guitar, bass, drums, vocals and Lynne's keyboard students. It will start with a spectacular combined drum item outside (if fine) and will finish with a short rock band showcase and prizegiving!After the initial drum item, students will split up into simultaneous itinerant concerts in venues such as the music room, media room and library before concluding with the prizegiving and short showcase in the hall.
These concerts are an important opportunity for all the students to perform to a supportive audience.

Saturday 4th December 10.30am. New Brighton Santa Parade. The Jazz Band will perform Christmas Music on a float in the New Brighton Santa Parade.

Sun 5th Dec Rock afternoon 4.30pm combined with other Intermediate and primary schools’ rock bands at Zebedees, 479 Blenheim Rd
We are once again holding a Primary Schools' end of year event to showcase our young rock bands. There will be prizes for outstanding musicians/solos etc.
When: Sunday Dec 5th 4.30pm - 6.30pm
Where: Zebedees, (a non-alchoholic youth night spot) on 479 Blenheim Road, ChCh (next to the Wild West Minigolf)
Who: Rock bands up to year 8 (Primary and Intermediate schools only)
What: Bands can play up to 3 pieces or 10 minutes, covers or originals.
Cost: Gold coin or $5 family. Drinks available for purchase.

Sunday 12th December Repercussion Concert. 6.30pm. Chisnallwood Percussion Ensemble will be taking part in this annual event for percussionists. It will be held at Cashmere High School and features performances given by professional percussionists as well as performances from various Christchurch schools – both primary and secondary. Rehearsal 5pm. Performance 6.30pm.

Itinerant Music Nights

ITINERANT MUSIC NIGHT 1 - Nov 24th 6.30pm. This is the concert for all students learning flute, sax, clarinet, trumpet, french horn, violin, cello, piano and keyboard at Chisnallwood. It will conclude with a short orchestra performance and prizegiving!

ITINERANT NIGHT 2 - Dec 2nd. This concert is for all students learning guitar, bass, drums, vocals and Lynne's keyboard students. It will start with a spectacular combined drum item and finish with a short rock band showcase and prizegiving!

These concerts will start with simultaneous itinerant concerts in venues such as the music room, media room and library run by the itinerant teachers. They will conclude with the prizegiving and short showcase in the hall. These concerts are an important opportunity for all the students to perform to a supportive audience.

Kids For Kids Choir Concert

World Vision Kids For Kids Concert with Suzanne Prentice. November 22nd. 7.30pm at the James Hay Theatre, Town Hall, Kilmore St.

Fifty Chisnallwood students will take part in this combined schools' Christmas choir concert. Important details about the morning rehearsal and evening performance (as well as lyrics) can be found either at http://chisnallwoodmusic.wikispaces.com/Choir or at http://www.worldvision.org.nz/Kids4Kids/

Please note there will be a dress rehearsal on Monday morning 22nd November at the Town Hall! The bus will leave Chisnallwood at 8.40am and be back at school by 1pm. Please bring a snack and drink for morning tea at the rehearsal.At night students are to wear bright clothing and where possible tinsel, santa hats or other Christmas themed accessories. Please bear in mind that it gets hot on stage so clothing needs to be lightweight. No sweatshirts or jackets.Parents please read the "info for parents"Soloist auditions:
  • The Kids for Kids music director will audition two soloists per school for the following songs:12 Days of Christmas (two parts), Silent Night (one part), Edelweiss (one part) and When a Child is Born (one part).
  • Auditions will take place during the morning tea break of the rehearsal.
What time to be there at night:
  • Please ensure that all students are backstage by 6:45pm.
  • We will start getting the students on stage by 7:10pm.
  • The concert will start by 7:30pm.
  • The concert will conclude by 9:15pm.

Upcoming performances

Thursday 18th November 1pm
The Jazz Band and chamber groups will present a programme for senior citizens in the Shirley area at Emmett St Christian Centre, 106 Emmett St (opposite Acheson Ave). Parents and any seniors are welcome. Afternoon tea provided.

Friday 19th November
NZEI Teachers’ graduation function. The Jazz Band will be providing background music for the social function which takes place after the graduation ceremony. 6pm -6.40pm in the Green Room (Aurora Centre) at Burnside High School. (Band to arrive at 5.15pm)

Sat 20th November afternoon 2pm
Chamber group performance for the Drury Theatre Organ Charitable Trust, "Knightsbank" 164 Whincops Rd, Halswell Entry $15 donation adult, children free and a raffle will be run. BYO folding chair, cups and finger food. Hot water, tea and coffee will be provided. The concert features their resident organist Richard Hore QSM, the Chisnallwood Chamber group and the Richmond Bell Ringers. The proceeds from this show will be divided between CanTeen and the City Mission.

Monday 18th October
11am. Preschool visit to Chisnallwood Orchestra

Wednesday 20th October 9am-4pm
Recording day for Jazz, Rock Bands and Orchestra rhythm section.

Thursday 21st October
Primary Schools Music Festival.
Morning rehearsal for the evening performance. Bus will leave school at 9.00am, returning at 12.30 approx.
The Chisnallwood Choir will be performing in the Christchurch Town Hall at 7.30pm

Saturday 23rd October
Big Band Festival
The Jazz Band will be performing early Saturday afternoon, plus there is a special youth session with experienced local and international Jazz musicians from 10 – 12am.

Saturday 30th October
Marimba Festival
The marimba group will be taking part in a concert at St Andrew’s College Gymnasium at 1pm.

8th, 9th, 10th November
Music Group Performances for Year 6 students.
These will take place at Chisnallwood at 9.40am each morning.

Thursday 18th November 1.30pm

Itinerant Concert 2.
As for Concert 1 but with an emphasis on the rock instruments.

Saturday 4th December
New Brighton Santa Parade
The Jazz Band will perform Christmas Music on a float in the Santa Parade. Parade starts at 10.30am.

Sunday 12th December
Repercussion Concert

Big Band Festival

BIG BAND FESTIVAL - Labour weekend
This year there is a Youth Programme which is a fantastic opportunity for young musicians (especially wind, brass and rhythm section) to learn from and play with top musicians from NZ, Australia and USA!
It is free of charge but you must register online (or see Mrs Bell for a registration form).
The Youth workshop runs from 10am-12 on Sat 22nd Oct (at CPIT) with a performance early afternoon at Boaters in the Town Hall. The Chisnallwood Jazz Band will also be performing at this!
There are lots of performances and other masterclasses to attend and cheap entry (for those who took part in the Youth Programme) to the amazing not-to-be-missed Sunday night concert !
Special guest players include Bill Cunliffe (USA), Bob Sheppard (USA), Rodger Fox.

Free NZSO Concert next week

The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra are kindly giving next week's concert for free in ChCh to offer people some relief from earthquake stress. It is called Soundscapes and features Scottish percussionist Colin Currie.
It is on Thursday 15th Sept at 6.30pm

Workshops at school next week

Drum Maintenance Workshop Wed 15th Sept

4 - 6pm Run by Dave Smith

Cost $10 Limited to 20 spaces so be in quick!

This is a hands on workshop where everyone will get to re-skin and tune a drum and learn about drumkit setup and positioning. Students may bring their own snare to re-skin.

Music News Update

Chamber performance tomorrow is now cancelled due to continuing aftershocks, but Richard Hore is hoping the group can perform with him at a later occasion.

Jazz Band - you can now register for the tour online! (since you can't bring the permission forms back to school). Go to chisnallwoodmusic.wikispaces.com/Jazz+Band and click on the link on the jazz band page (recommend that you right click and open in a new tab or window). It will help us if you can fill this in soon. You can also download the schedule.
There is also a link to some photos on that page of Rodger Fox's visit last week!

A new page on the wiki is visiting performances where you can check out some photos and video of visiting performances at Chisnallwood.

The Royal Schools Theory entry date has kindly been extended by a week for Christchurch entrants. If you would like to enter, please let us know next week or fill in the form on the music theory wiki page

School is scheduled to resume on Monday 13th Sept at this stage but I will keep you posted if there are any changes. Good news is that the Performing Arts block and contents were completely unharmed in the earthquake!
I will also keep you posted about the Kids In Town Performance currently scheduled for Thursday next week (Jazz and Chamber)

The under 5s concert scheduled for 5th Sept has been cancelled due to earthquake damage in the ChCh Music Centre.
Also the school will be closed Monday and Tuesday.
We will present the Under 5s programme at another time.

Coming up this week

Firstly congratulations to the all the music groups on Monday night who raised well over $700 for the Police Dog Fund. It was a lovely evening and well done to Jordan McDonnell for running this! You can view some photos here and the Press article here.
Secondly, congratulations to the jazz and chamber groups for wonderful performances for the Afternoon Delights series on Thursday. Thank you to our special guests Nola Mills, Ella Dunbar-Wilcox and Greg Knowles.

Coming up:
RODGER FOX is in town! There will be two opportunities to work with him.
1. Sept 1st "Jazz For Juniors". 4pm -5.30pm at Cashmere High School Performing Arts Centre. Cost $10. Open to ALL young musicians! eg, anyone taking itinerant lessons or in the orchestra... Book here
2. Sept 2nd 10.30am - 12. Rodger will work with our school jazz band at Chisnallwood!
UKULELE: Sept 1st 1-2pm. The ukulele band will give a short performance in the town hall as part of the cultural festival.
RUIA TE KAKANO and PASIFIKA will be performing at the Cultural Festival on Tuesday night 31st August. 6.45pm

POLICE DOG FUNDRAISER CONCERT

This special concert has been organized by Jordan and Danielle McDonnell and will be combined with Windsor Primary.
Day: Monday Aug 23rd
Time 6.45pm-8.45 (Performers please be at school by 6.30)
Where: Chisnallwood Intermediate School Hall
Cost: Gold coin entry minimum - all funds go to the Police Dog Trust
There will be performances by students from Windsor and Chisnallwood featuring a combined orchestra, combined choir and other groups including rock bands, ukulele and jazz. We also look forward to a visit from Constable Wheatley and his police pup.

JAZZ QUEST




Here are the details for the Chisnallwood Jazz Bands for Sunday July 25th.

Chisnallwood Combo 1.30pm
Chisnallwood combined Big Band 2.30pm
The combo should be at CPIT jazz school by 1pm - go straight to the warmup room JZ225.
The Big Band should arrive by 1.30 to hear the combo (top floor), then proceed to the warmup room JZ225 at 2pm where they prepare for their performance at 2.30pm.
The session runs from 1.30 - 4.30 and it is the expectation that students remain for the entire session where possible.

There will be about 24 bands playing over the weekend from secondary schools in ChCh, Waimea and Auckland. The whole event runs on Sat and Sunday 24th and 25th from 9.30am - 4.30pm.
The aududicator is Claude Askew, former drummer with the US AirForceBand and Airmen of Note.
Entry to the public is gold coin donation.

Performances in July

ORGAN SOCIETY CONCERT
Sunday July 18th, 2pm at Opawa Baptist Church 285 Wilsons Rd - cnr Hastings St East and Wilsons Rd
The Jazz Band and Chamber Ensemble have been invited to perform a 20 minute bracket at the Organ Society Concert on at 2pm. The concert runs from 2 - 4pm with an interval and Chisnallwood is on in the first half. Entry $5 (free for performers)

JAZZQUEST

This event runs the weekend of July 24th and 25th at CPIT Jazz School
Both the Chisnallwood Big Band and Combo will be performing 20 minute brackets on Sunday afternoon. Gold coin entry for public.

Thursday 1st July 1.45 - 2.45. Vocal masterclass with Ravil Atlas. Free for all vocal students, Gold coin for others.

RockQuest Congratulations


Congratulations to "Chain Reaction" for their fabulous performance last Friday at the Rockquest Regional Finals at the Isaac Theatre Royal! They were a real credit to themselves and the school! Also congratulations to Kayley Linden for winning the female air-guitar competition! Congratulations to the yr12/13 band "Runaway Joe" with 3 ex-Chisnallwood students who were placed 2nd the following night. Many thanks to the students and parents who came and supported Chain Reaction and the other bands at Rockquest.

RockQuest Congratulations

Congratulations to all the rockbands for fabulous performances at rockquest!! They all were awesome!

And well done to "Chain Reaction" for getting through to the REGIONAL FINALS for rockquest! Just 28 bands were chosen for this out of 80 bands mostly from high schools!

"Chain Reaction" will be playing at the Theatre Royal on Friday, June 11th.
Tickets $15.
7pm start.
Please come and support them at this event!
Chain Reaction needs to be there early at 5.45pm.

The school bands will next be playing on Sat 22nd in Latimer Square from 11.20 - 11.50am as part of Hepatitis C Awareness Day.

Chartfest

This is a NZ music industry event which our school Ukulele Band is performing in. It may also be of interest to our rock musicians as well as our sound and lighting techs. We are leaving school at 12noon and ask the students get picked up from the town hall either at 4.30pm or 5.15pm depending on whether they are attending the song writing workshop.
